Today, we did an MPA Watch, where we hiked to the top of the ridge and surveyed the waters surrounding the east edge of the island for any human violations. This is important data for scientists, since it can be difficult to monitor Marine Protected Areas due to their size and scale. Our surveys contribute to a database that helps to keep these areas pristine and safe from harmful human impact.
This picture shows the Wrigley Science Institute and cove from the top of the ridge.
Does that fog in the background look familiar? 🙂
Remember, Marine Protected Areas are places that protect entire ocean ecosystems. MPAs protect the existing marine biodiversity at 3 levels: ecosystem, species and genetic. They also provide resilience to protect against potentially damaging external impacts, such as global warming and ocean acidification. Around Catalina Island, no one is supposed to anchor boats, fish, or do anything consumptive. On our MPA watch, we spotted two kayakers who were violating MPA regulations, as they had fishing gear on the boats–evidence that they were fishing in waters that are specifically designated as no take zones. We recorded it, and uploaded the data so that actions can be taken, such as increased monitoring of certain areas.
Later in the afternoon, we got to go to the touch tank, which is in front of the research center in the above picture, with the smaller roof. It was absolutely amazing! I got to hold all kinds of echinoderms–a family of sea organisms with spiny skins; a sea urchin as it moved in my hand, a starfish and sea cucumber. Did you know that some species of starfish can release an arm when threatened, and then GROW A WHOLE NEW BODY FROM THAT ONE ARM? Here are a few of my favorites from the touch tank.

We visited the touch tank in preparation for our rocky intertidal survey out in the field. We will be surveying intertidal organisms and contributing data to a research study that has been collecting data on these organisms for several years. More on this tomorrow!

Really Interesting, Cathy! I wish I could be there!
The first word, biodiversity, means the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. The second word, Ocean Acidification, means the decrease of the pH of water over time. I have learned that this destroys sea life and reefs. This can happen because of the co2 of the air being absorbed by the ocean, another effect of climate change! The third word, Consumptive, means to use up resources. The last word, intertidal, means the change between high and low tide.
Thanks for this amazing article,
Thijs
